9. Hao Yu Lee

Hao Yu Lee is a young infield prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization. Originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies, he performed strongly in the 2021 Arizona Fall League and has been progressing through the minors. In 2023, he was traded to the Tigers in the Michael Lorenzen trade.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a storied franchise in Major League Baseball. Founded in 1882, they boast a rich history filled with both championship glory and periods of struggle. Collecting the best Pittsburgh Pirates cards is a part of honoring that tradition.

Originally christened the Alleghenys, the team played in the American Association for its first five seasons before joining the National League (NL) in 1887. 10. Bill Mazeroski

Player History

Bill Mazeroski, affectionately known as “Maz” and “The Glove,” spent his entire 17-year Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Primarily known for his exceptional defensive skills at second base, his legacy is forever intertwined with the dramatic walk-off home run he hit in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, the first in baseball history to end the Series.

Mazeroski had numerous, celebrated accolades in his career with the Pirates. He earned seven All-Star selections (1960-1966, 1969) and eight Gold Gloves (1964-1971), a testament to his defensive prowess. Mazeroski was one of the best defenders of the 1960s, with a bWAR over 1.5 for eight seasons. He was also durable: As a starter from 1957-1968, Mazeroski averaged 150 games per season.

Mazeroski wasn’t just a valuable member of the Pirates; he became a symbol of the franchise’s resilience. The final at-bat of the 1960 World Series, where the underdog Pirates faced the heavily favored New York Yankees, shocked the baseball world. Down to their last strike in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 7, Mazeroski’s walk-off home run cemented the Pirates’ victory and etched his name into baseball lore. Said Bill Mazeroski: “The home run took a while to sink in because all I could think of was, ‘We beat the Yankees! We beat the Yankees.'”

Charles Benjamin “Babe” Adams, a right-handed pitcher, spent nearly his entire 21-year Major League Baseball career (1906-1926) with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1909-1926). Noted for his remarkable control and exceptional longevity, Adams became a cornerstone of the Pirates’ pitching staff.

Adams’ achievements with the Pirates are numerous. He holds the franchise record for career victories by a right-hander (194) and shutouts (47). He led the National League in Earned Run Average twice (1910, 1914) and in Walks per Nine Innings once (1920). Moreover, his career average of 1.29 walks per nine innings pitched remains the second-lowest of the 20th century, showcasing his exceptional control. Additionally, he holds the modern record (until 2005) for the fewest walks per nine in a season (1.00 in 1920).

Adams served as a vital cog in the Pirates’ pitching rotation, consistently delivering quality starts and contributing to their championship aspirations. He played a crucial role in the team’s 1909 World Series victory, pitching three complete-game victories as a rookie and setting a record for rookies that still stands today. His presence brought stability and consistency to the pitching staff, earning him the respect of his teammates and coaches.

Despite his accomplishments, Adams never received the individual accolades some of his contemporaries did. He was never selected to an All-Star game, which wasn’t established until 1933. Nonetheless, his impact on the Pirates and his lasting contributions to the franchise are undeniable. Not a lot of cards were issued during Babe Adams’ playing days. The 1915 Cracker Jack is the most notable – a set loaded with the likes of Shoeless Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb and myriad other superstars. You can find this card in decent shape, despite its age, and a PSA 8 runs around $1,000-$1,500.

8. Max Carey

Player History

Max Carey, born Maximilian George Carnarius, carved a 17-year Major League Baseball career, with 16 of those spent with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1910-1926). He is primarily remembered for his exceptional speed and base running skills, known for his daring and innovative sliding techniques.

Carey joined the Pirates as a 20 year old rookie shortstop. The problem? The Pirates had a shortstop: Honus Wagner. Instead, Carey moved to the outfield and became a defensive standout at his brand new position, playing primarily center field.

Carey’s presence on the Pirates’ lineup added a dynamic element and forced opposing teams to play him with caution. His offensive production, coupled with his base-stealing prowess, kept pressure on the defense and created scoring opportunities. He enjoyed a positive relationship with his teammates and coaches, known for his humor and dedication to the team.

Carey had numerous achievements during his career with the Pirates. He achieved a .300 batting average six times, and he won a World Series title in 1925 while leading the team with a .458 average and three stolen bases.

Max Carey also holds the franchise record for stolen bases, swiping 571 bases. He led the National League in stolen bases a staggering ten times, including six consecutive seasons from 1915 to 1920. He is ninth all-time in stolen bases, with more stolen bases than legendary speedsters Joe Morgan and Kenny Lofton. Said Carey: “Stealing bases is the art of picking up little things – things like a spitball pitcher who never threw to first if he was going to throw a spitter to the plate.”

Carey was also an innovator whose ideas are still influencing baseball players over a century later. For example, Carey’s mother – concerned for her son’s well being – sewed a sliding pad into his pants. Carey later patented it, and many modern players wear sliding shorts or padding of some kind. He was also one of the first players to use flip-down sunglasses in the field.

Max Carey was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1961.

In a sport that would soon be dominated by sluggers, Max Carey often stayed off the radar. He’s in the legendary 1915 Cracker Jack set, but a better choice is his much rarer 1912 T207. Cards in the middle grades cost around $300-$500, and no example beyond a PSA 7 are known to exist.

7. Barry Bonds

Player History

Barry Bonds, renowned for his later exploits with the San Francisco Giants, played his first seven seasons (1986-1992) with the Pittsburgh Pirates. During this time, he established himself as a gifted baseball player, evolving from a raw talent into a feared power hitter and all-around offensive threat.

In Pittsburgh, Bonds was famous for speed moreso than power. He stole 5 bases in 1990, with 33 home runs. However, over time he transitioned from a slap-hitting approach to a more powerful swing, a change that unlocked his full potential as a hitter.

Because many of Barry Bonds accolades came after he joined the Giants, it’s easy to forget that he was a remarkable hitter for seven seasons in Pittsburgh too. From 1990 to 1992, Bonds won MVP twice and finished second once. He also won three Gold Gloves, three Silver Slugger awards and went to the All-Star Game twice.

Barry Bonds had nearly 1,000 hits in his time with the Pirates and an OBP of .380. He also led the league in slugging twice as he transitioned into a power hitter. In the same period of time, Bonds also guided the Pirates to three consecutive NLCS series. These stats and achievements paved the way for his historic free agent signing with San Francisco in 1993.

Of course, we know what happened next – four straight MVPs with the Giants and a record-breaking 762 all-time homeruns. However, Bonds became a disgraced figure when he was indicted for his role in the BALCO scandal. The courts alleged that a network of medical professionals and athletes were using, and covering up, performance-enhancing drugs. This scandal plagued Major League Baseball in the early 2000s. There is inconclusive evidence that Bonds ever knowingly used steroids but, ultimately, his name became synonymous with the scandal.

Barry Bonds has not been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Barry Bonds has a number of Pirates rookie cards on the market from the 1986 and 1987 sets, and they’re all valuable in their own right. But a few things make this Toys “R” Us card stand out. First, nothing says “80s childhood dreams” like Toys “R” Us. Many Gen Xers have fond memories of walking those aisles. Also, this is only one of only two Bonds rookies where he’s smiling, which adds to the feeling of childhood joy. In ungraded condition, the card costs around $5-10. High grades are $50-$100.

6. Pie Traynor

Player History

Harold Joseph “Pie” Traynor, born in 1898, spent his entire 18-year Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, solidifying his place as a legend of the franchise. Primarily known for his exceptional defense at third base and consistent hitting, Traynor captained the team to their first World Series victory in 16 years and became a cornerstone of their success in the 1920s and 1930s.

Offensively, Traynor batted over .300 ten times, with seven seasons where he drove in over 100 runs. Notably, he led the league in triples in 1923, showcasing his base-running ability. Traynor also finished in the Top 20 of MVP voting an amazing nine times. This was a testament to his consistency, although he never won it. He finished his career with 2,416 hits and a .320 batting average and a .362 OBP.

Traynor won the World Series in 1925. He hit .346 in the series with 4 RBI and the second-highest OPS on the team. He also managed the Pirates for six seasons, including several as a player-manager. Traynor finished his managerial career with a .530 winning percentage. In later years, he served as a scout and radio personality in Pittsburgh.

Traynor was widely-regarded as the best pre-World War II third baseman, whose accomplishments have been eclipsed only by the evolution of the game into one dominated by power hitters.

Pie Traynor was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948.

Pie Traynor appears in famous sets like 1933 Goudey, but the 1934 Diamond Stars Pirates card is more fun to chase, has better aesthetics and a better chase for collectors. The card has some of the most vibrant colors of the era, and a nice composition overall. The card costs around $200 in mid-range conditions.

5. Paul Waner

Player History

Paul Waner, nicknamed “Big Poison,” patrolled the right field for the Pittsburgh Pirates for 15 seasons, from 1926 to 1940. Renowned for his consistent hitting and defensive prowess, Waner established himself as a cornerstone of the Pirates’ lineup and a fan favorite.

Waner’s enjoyed numerous accolades during his tenure with Pittsburgh. He led the National League in batting average three times (1927, 1934, and 1936), his 1927 title propelling him to the National League’s Most Valuable Player award. Notably, his 1927 season saw him lead the league in hits (237), runs batted in (131), and stolen bases (37), solidifying his all-around offensive talent.

For his career, Waner held many Pirates records. He’s second all-time in batting average (.340) and runs scored, and third in hits for the franchise. He’s also third all-time in WAR for Pittsburgh. He had 3,152 hits in his career (19th all-time in MLB), 2,868 of which came for the Pirates. He batted .300 or better fourteen times in his career.

Paul Waner played alongside his brother, Lloyd, for the majority of his career. Paul Waner allegedly received his nickname, “Big Poison,” by accident. Waner’s nickname was “Big Person” – contrasting with his brother, “Little Person” – but fans with New York accents sounded like they were saying “Poison” instead. The names stuck.

Paul Waner was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1952.

Paul Waner is in the 1933 Goudey set – his first full-color card. Prices for this card vary wildly, with anything near-mint priced in the thousands. In mid-grades, the card is a more affordable $200-$400. For a little humor, check out the 1936 National Chicle Fine Pens, featuring “Big Jim” Weaver holding Paul and Lloyd Waner on his shoulders. This Pirates card costs under $100 in mid-grade conditions.

4. Arky Vaughan

Player History

Joseph Floyd “Arky” Vaughan played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for ten seasons, from 1932 to 1941. He established himself as a premier shortstop in the National League, earning a reputation for his defensive prowess and offensive contributions.

“I am convinced that, pound for pound, Arky Vaughan is the least-known great Major League Baseball player ever.”

Vaughan had many exceptional achievements during his years with the Pirates. He led the National League in runs scored twice (1936 and 1940) and triples three times (1935 and 1938). He batted over .300 in all ten seasons with the Pirates, reaching a league-leading .385 in 1935, a record for 20th-century National League shortstops and a franchise record for the Pirates. Vaughan was also named to the National League All-Star team eight times, and he received MVP votes in seven of his ten seasons with Pittsburgh.

Vaughan was overlooked in many ways because he didn’t play for great teams, and because he was so consistently great that it was easy for fans to become complacent about his abilities. In fact, Vaughan never played a season – for any team – in which he didn’t either receive MVP votes or appear in an All-Star Game. Bill James, in his The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, ranked Vaughan as the second-greatest shortstop ever.

Vaughan retired, relatively young, at the age of 31 to spend more time with his family. Tragically, several years later Vaughan and a friend were fishing when their boat capsized in a storm. Vaughan tried to rescue his friend, but they both died. Vaughan was 40 years old.

Sportswriter Milt Richman commented: “As exceptional a ballplayer as he was, Vaughan was every bit as noble a human being. This isn’t something I found out about him in a book. It’s what I discovered for myself from knowing him.”

Arky Vaughan was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.

Best Pittsburgh Pirates baseball card: 1936 Wheaties Series 3 Arky Vaughan

Wheaties issued some memorable cards in the 30s. These were printed in the brand’s colors and had to be cut off the cereal box. Arky Vaughan’s 1936 Wheaties card celebrates his batting title against a red background, with a facsimile signature in the corner. The cards are all hand-cut, so try to find one that includes the postage stamp-like border. The cards, while rare, maintain their condition because they’re printed on thick cardboard. Vaughan’s Wheaties card is about $50 in ungraded, mid-range condition.

3. Willie Stargell

Player History

Willie Stargell, affectionately known as “Pops” later in his career, spent his entire 21-year Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1962-1982). He carved out a legacy as one of the most feared power hitters of his generation. Stargell’s imposing presence at the plate and his ability to launch tape-measure home runs into the vast expanses of Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium captured the imagination of fans.

Stargell’s trophy cabinet reflects his impact on the game. A seven-time All-Star, he led the National League in home runs twice, swatting a career-high 48 in 1971 and following it up with 44 in 1973. That 1971 season was particularly noteworthy.  Stargell’s bat helped propel the Pirates to their first World Series title in decades, and his strong performance earned him a second-place finish in the National League Most Valuable Player voting. He would add another significant achievement in 1979, capturing both the National League MVP Award and World Series MVP Award as the Pirates secured their second championship of the decade.

Stargell was 39 years old when he won MVP – the oldest player to do so at the time (now second to Barry Bonds). He finished in the Top 3 of MVP voting an additional three times in his career. Heretired with a lifetime batting average of .282, 475 home runs and 2,232 hits. He also holds the Pirates franchise record for home runs (475) and RBIs (1,409).

Willie Stargell was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.

Willie Stargell had a unique batting grip, where he would place his bottom hand around the knob of the bat. This gave him extra reach and control. Stargell’s 1975 Topps card shows his impressive swing, with a look at his hand positioning too. In graded condition, PSA 8s or lower are well under $100, with premium prices only for the high grades.

2. Roberto Clemente

Player History

A true legend, Clemente was a well-rounded player with exceptional hitting (.315 career average), power, and defense (12 Gold Gloves). He won an MVP award, a World Series title in 1971, and remains a revered figure in the community.

Roberto Clemente, a name synonymous with baseball excellence and humanitarianism, spent his entire 18-year Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1955-1972). He established himself as a five-tool player; however, it was his potent bat that truly captured the fans’ attention, earning him the nickname “The Great One.”

Clemente was a 12-time Gold Glove Award winner in right field – the most ever at the position – and he displayed exceptional defensive prowess throughout his career.  Offensively, Clemente led the National League in batting average four times (1961, 1965, 1966, 1970) and became just the 11th player in history to reach the coveted 3,000 hit milestone in 1972.

Clemente’s crowning achievement in baseball was his National League MVP Award in 1966. Clemente was also a key contributor to the Pirates’ World Series victories in 1960 and 1971, earning World Series MVP honors in the latter.

For his career, Roberto Clemente had 3,000 hits, 240 homeruns and a .317 batting average. He is tied with Honus Wagner for the lead in games played for the Pirates (2,433). He also leads the team in all-time hits.

Clemente was an amazing player, but his impact transcended the game. A vocal advocate for Latino players in baseball, he paved the way for future generations. His tragic death in a plane crash while delivering earthquake relief supplies to Nicaragua in 1972 sent shockwaves through the baseball world. However, his legacy continues to inspire. Major League Baseball instituted a special award in his name to recognize outstanding humanitarian efforts.

Said Clemente: “Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth.”

The National Baseball Hall of Fame waived its usual five-year waiting period and elected Roberto Clemente to the Hall of Fame in 1973.

Rarely does a legendary set land at the same time as a legendary rookie, but the 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente card is one of those times. The cards are in horizontal format, with dual color images, and a facsimile signature.

In 2021, a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente PSA 9 card sold for over $1.1 million at auction, making it the eighth most expensive card of all time. Budget-minded collectors will need to chase lower grades. The average graded price of a Clemente rookie is $3,000-$7,000.

1. Honus Wagner

Player History

When you talk about the greatest baseball players of all time, Honus Wagner is in that conversation. Wagner spent 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and he is the team’s all-time leader in WAR (120.3). Renowned for his consistent hitting and defensive prowess, he is a legend within the franchise and the sport itself.

Renowned for his consistent hitting, “The Flying Dutchman” boasts the highest career WAR (120.3) amongst Pirates players, along with 8 batting titles and multiple stolen base titles. While he never won a World Series with the Pirates, his impact on the franchise is undeniable.

Wagner’s remarkable statistics show the player he was. He won eight batting titles, tied for second all-time (Ty Cobb is first with eleven). He led the league in slugging percentage six times and stolen bases five times, showcasing his well-rounded offensive skill set.

Wagner had a smooth swing, exceptional hand-eye coordination, and remarkable speed on the basepaths. Off the field, he had a quiet demeanor and showed dedication to the game, earning the nickname “The Flying Dutchman” due to his German heritage and swiftness on the field.

Honus Wagner was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class in 1936.

Best Pittsburgh Pirates baseball card: 1909-1911 T206 Honus Wagner

Was there any doubt? The T206 Honus Wagner card is the most famous baseball card in the world. Few copies of this card exist, and condition is always an issue when you do find them. Not only is natural condition a concern, but it’s important to look out for doctored versions too. So get out your checkbooks: An authentic T206 Honus Wagner sold to a private buyer in 2022 for $7.25 million.

If you can’t afford the multi-million dollar price tag of an authentic T206 Honus Wagner, consider this runner-up: 1914-1915 E145 Cracker Jack Honus Wagner #68. These cards still aren’t cheap, but they’re easier to find than their contemporaries because they came from a major set. It’s still not cheap – expect to pay $20,000 on the low end – but for a card of Honus Wagner from his playing days, this is the value end of the spectrum.

13. 1986 Fleer Mickey Hatcher #396 (“Big Glove”)

The 1986 Fleer set was forgettable, exception for this card of Mickey Hatcher wearing a comically-large glove. According to CBS, it happened very simply – a Mizuno glove representative brought the comically-large glove to Spring Training, and Fleer photographers captured the moment Hatcher tried it on. He took ownership of the glove a short time later and used it for comic relief with fans, although never in a game (rules are rules). He even appeared on his 1991 Upper Deck #666 baseball card carrying the glove around, so the joke continued.

Twenty-two years later, Yasiel Puig appeared on his 2013 Topps Update card with a large glove of his own – this one an Akadema model.

12. 1993 Upper Deck Mike Perez #204 (“Deja Vu”)

Now, this card would be pedestrian, but in 1993, it had collectors doing a double-take. The card shows pitcher Mike Perez, getting ready to autograph the card he’s on. What?

This is a weird baseball card for several reasons. First, there is no documented story about how it happened, but there was clearly planning involved. Secondly, as with many of the athletes on this list, the choice of athlete raises questions. Why Mike Perez? He was a reliever who had a few good years across an eight-year career, but this set had 840 cards. Perez is the only one to get the Inception treatment.

11. 1993 Donruss Joe Oliver #586 (“Falling Over”)

It’s hard to pin down why Donruss chose this photo of Joe Oliver for the 1993 set, but everyone agrees on one thing: “Who did Joe Oliver upset at Donruss?”

Depending on your sense of humor, someone falling over isn’t that funny. But this card is unique and captures the imagination because there are so many unanswered questions. Why this photo, out of the thousands of photos that are taken of players every year? As far as we know, nobody has ever explained it, but we hope he at least got awarded first base for his troubles.

10. 1984 Fleer Jay Johnstone #495 (“Umbrella Hat”)

Johnstone’s 1984 Fleer card shows him wearing an umbrella hat seemingly made out of Budweiser labels. But the umbrella hat is actually a “Brockabrella,” an invention made for Lou Brock while he was Budweiser’s spokesperson in the 1970s.

According to Johnstone, he didn’t know his photo was being taken. Afterwards, he said that Budweiser began sending him free cases of beer as a thank you for the free publicity from the impromptu shot, and the Brockabrella, which could have been lost to history, is now immortalized on this 1984 Fleer card.

9. 1996 Pinnacle Bob Hamelin #289 (“Photo Day”)

Bob Hamelin burst onto the scene and won the Rookie of the Year award in 1994, but then promptly lost the magic. His 1996 Pinnacle card shows a photo of Hamelin during photo day in Spring Training, hamming it up with his name card.

According to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, the card was poorly received by fans and the media; Slate called it “the worst baseball card of all time.” What seems to offend them is similar to the unanswered questions with Joe Oliver’s card in 1993 – Why? Goofy photos can be funny, but they still tell a story. This card, in contrast, is oddly cropped and doesn’t make any sense. It’s especially true for a player who is more interesting than what he’s been given here. Regardless, this is a weird baseball card that divides fans.

8. 1952 Topps Gus Zernial #31 (“OK Six”)

There’s a lot to unpack with the oldest card on our list. The card features Gus Zernial posing with a bat that has six baseballs stuck onto it, and he’s giving the “OK” sign with his other hand.

What the card doesn’t mention is that Zernial hit six home runs in three consecutive games in 1951, and this card is celebrating that fact. This was one of the first modern baseball card sets, which is important for two reasons:

1. This is one of the first concept baseball cards
2. Card companies couldn’t yet design at a scale that would allow them to create headlines or graphics to celebrate an event. Photography was the easiest way to do it.

While fans in 1952 may have been taken aback by this card, it became an important part of the evolution of mass-produced baseball cards.

7. 1993 Topps Stadium Club Oscar Azocar #257 (“Bat Hug”)

Hitters love their bats, but Oscar Azocar takes it to the next level. His 1993 Stadium Club card shows him hugging his bat in a portrait-style photo. On at least two other funny baseball cards (1991 Topps and 1992 Mother’s Cookies), Azocar has done some bat gymnastics by balancing a ball between his bats.

From the National Baseball Hall of Fame: “There was much more to Azocar than pure numbers. He loved to smile…. Azocar simply loved playing baseball, along with the experience of being around the ballpark.”

A few years later, Rex Hudler got in trouble with his mother (seriously, per MLB.com) for hugging a dugout pole on his 1995 Topps Stadium Club #51.

6. 1999 Topps Chrome Brian Hunter #274 (“Base Stealing”)

Some of the funniest baseball cards are those that would be so normal, but for one choice. In this 462-card set, someone decided to hand Brian Hunter a robber’s mask and take a photo of his “stealing” bases (get it?). This is one of those funny baseball cards because you can picture collectors opening a pack, flipping through the cards, and then finding this. Also, the composition and use of the chrome coloring is perfect.

Hunter was a prolific base stealer – he led the league twice, with 74 stolen bases in 1997 and 44 in 1999. He finished his career with 260 stolen bases over a 10-year career. No word on whether he put the bases back when he was done with them.

5. 1984 Fleer Glenn Hubbard #182 (“Snake Card”)

There was something in the water on Photo Day for the 1984 Fleer set, because Glenn Hubbard has the most famous card in the set. He’s holding a large snake and he seems pretty happy about it. Adding some intrigue, the Phillie Phanatic is in the background, so this was part of a Braves road trip.

Said Hubbard: “They had a guy with a snake. I grabbed the guy and I grabbed the photographer and said, ‘Can I get my picture taken with the snake?’ Well, unbeknownst to me, the photographer was a freelance photographer for Fleer, a start-up company, and they just wanted some unique cards. That’s how it came about.”

Hubbard initially didn;t like the card and refused to autograph it, but his stance has softened lately. He was even immortalized with a bobblehead from Lexington Legends, holding the snake (obviously).

4. 1989 ProCards Keith Comstock #14 (“Drilled with the Ball”)

1989 was the pinnacle of potty humor on baseball cards. ProCards isn’t a major release, but it became famous when the company printed a “blooper” card of pitcher Keith Comstock. During the photoshoot, Comstock apparently requested a more interesting pose than the typical baseball card action shot. The result? A photo of him getting drilled in the groin with a baseball.

His facial expression is hilarious and the potty humor appealed to many. The card is still popular on the secondary market. It sells for around $10 ungraded, with graded versions for sale at around $100.

3. 1976 Topps Kurt Bevacqua #564 (“Bubble Gum Blowing Champ”)

This card shows third baseman Kurt Bevacqua blowing a massive bubble in the Joe Garagiola “Bazooka Bubble Gum Blowing Championship.” According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, this was a real competition among teams. There was drama about how to measure the bubbles, and two teams sat out the competition because they were on losing streaks, but there were actual champions crowned.

Ultimately, Kurt Bevacqua won with an 18.25-inch bubble. He won $1,000 for himself, $1,000 for a charity of his choice, and a full case of Bazooka bubble gum. The card immortalizes his win, showing his bubble and the calipers used to measure it.

Ken Griffey Jr. duplicated this feat on his 1995 Pinnacle card. He’s depicted blowing a huge bubble in front of his locker (and looking shocked while doing it).

2. 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken #616 (“F— Face”)

Depending on your tastes, this may or may not be funny. The 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken card is the stuff of legend – we even wrote a whole article about it. As the story goes, Ripken “accidentally” posed for a photo with an obscenity written on the knob of his bat. Then, Fleer “accidentally” never noticed until the card was printed and distributed. From that point, the company made several attempts to obscure the word, with varying degrees of success and rarity.

Ultimately, Ripken said he was not involved in the controversy, but he thinks it was intentional on Fleer’s part. Either way, if your humor leans towards the crude and rude, this is the funniest card on the list.

1. 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter Daniel Nava Oddity Relics #AGOR-01 (“Beard Shavings”)

Allen & Ginter is known for producing odd cards alongside their typical baseball offerings. You can get cards of bald eagles, unicorns and a “Bigfoot” autograph. But the Daniel Nava relic in the 2014 set is on another level. The card is serial numbered out of 25 copies and each one contains some of Nava’s playoff beard clippings.

According to Beckett, the clippings are real, and one auction listing sold for $400.

Mark Belanger’s best season – 6.5 WAR – and his only All-Star campaign was in 1976. Belanger is shown at shortstop, exactly where Orioles fans loved seeing him. Outside of gem-mint specimens, this Baltimore Orioles card is an affordable $4-$6 for mint condition copies.

9. Adam Jones

Player History

Adam Jones, affectionately nicknamed “A.J.” by fans, had an eleven-year stint with the team from 2008 to 2018. Primarily known for his power hitting and athleticism, Jones became a fan favorite. In 1917 – Roush’s first full season with the Reds – he hit .341 and beat Rogers Hornsby for the National League batting title. 5. Frank Robinson

Player History

Frank Robinson’s 10 seasons (1956-1965) with the Cincinnati Reds were a period of individual brilliance in the days before the Big Red Machine. Stepping onto the field at 20 years old, he immediately made an impact, leading the team in home runs by mid-season. His play earned an All-Star nod and the Rookie of the Year award. The Reds, coming off 11 straight losing seasons, surprised everyone by contending for the pennant that year, ultimately falling just two games short.

Robinson’s power continued to be his calling card. He led the National League in homers in 1962, the same year he won his first National League MVP award. He consistently drove in runs, averaging over 100 RBIs per season from 1961 to 1965. Despite his individual success, the Reds never quite managed to reach the World Series during his tenure.

In 1965, however, the Reds traded Robinson to the Baltimore Orioles in a controversial move. A decade later, he became the first Black manager in Major League history. Said writer Tom Friend, of Robinson’s drive to succeed: “He had so much fire in him. He was Rookie of the Year in 1956 and NL MVP in 1961, but the scouting reports all said plays with a chip on his shoulder.”

2. Johnny Bench

In 1967, he won Rookie of the Year, along with his first of 10 consecutive Gold Gloves and the first of 13 straight All-Star appearances (and 14 total). His Gold Glove tally is second all-time among catchers. But Bench wasn’t just a defensive wizard. At the plate, he amassed 389 home runs, a record for catchers at the time, and drove in 1,376 runs.

Beyond the stats, Bench was a leader. He captained the “Big Red Machine” to six division titles, four National League pennants, and two World Series championships in the 1970s, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest winners in baseball history.

From 1963 to 1986, Rose established himself as a relentless offensive force. He holds the MLB record for most career hits with 4,256. He holds Reds records for games played, at bats, total bases, runs scored and WAR (among others).

Beyond individual accolades, Rose played a key role in the Reds’ golden age. He was a vital cog in the “Big Red Machine” dynasty of the 1970s, winning two World Series championships and three National League pennants.

As a player, Rose’s blue-collar work ethic and passion for the game resonated with many. He was known for his hard-nosed style of playing – earning the nickname “Charlie Hustle” – as he would frequently barrel into opponents in pursuit of runs. Rose later went on to manage the Reds from 1984 to 1989.

Despite his on-field brilliance, Rose’s career ended on a controversial note. In 1989, he was banned from baseball for betting on games, tarnishing his image and leaving a complex legacy.

The white border makes the colors pop, and the close-up pose is crisp and engaging. PSA 9s sell in five figures, but a mid-grade version of the card is priced around $500.

The Detroit Tigers were established in 1894, and they were among the original members of the Western League. The team underwent several transformations before settling in Detroit as the Tigers in 1901. Over the years, the Tigers have woven a narrative that spans triumphs, disappointments, and enduring legacies.

Early Tigers’ teams had a nomadic existence. Originally founded as the Grand Rapids Rustlers, the team transitioned through a series of relocations and name changes, including stints as the Detroit Wolverines and the Detroit Tigers. In 1901, the Tigers officially joined the American League as one of its charter members.

10. Lou Whitaker

Lou Whitaker was a legendary second baseman for the Detroit Tigers from 1977 to 1995. Whitaker made an immediate contribution to the team in his first full season, hitting .285 and winning the AL Rookie of the Year award with 75% of the vote. In 1984, Whitaker was integral to the Tigers World Series championship, their first title in 16 years. He had five hits in the Series and a .409 OBP.

Whitaker was a model of consistency throughout his career, averaging 135 games played in every full season. His career numbers included a .276 batting average, 2,369 hits, 244 home runs, and 1,084 RBIs. Only 11 other second basemen have a higher WAR than Whitaker and his defensive skills were equally outstanding, earning him three Gold Glove Awards at second base. He also earned four Silver Slugger awards and five All-Star selections.

Whitaker’s exclusion from the National Baseball Hall of Fame is one of the sport’s enduring debates. Whitaker and Trammell played together for 19 seasons, and they amassed near-identical statistics. However, Trammell was elected to the Hall of Fame whereas Whitaker received only a modicum of support and eventually dropped off the ballot. Nevertheless, his legacy as one of the greatest Tigers remains firmly intact.

Whitaker’s best season came in 1983, when he had career highs in hits (206), batting average (.320) and games played (161). He also finished 8th in MVP voting that year – the only time he finished in the top 20. This card fetches around $100 for a PSA 10, and costs only $10-$20 for lower grades or ungraded versions.

9. Justin Verlander

Justin Verlander made an indelible impact during his tenure with the Detroit Tigers, which lasted 13 seasons. Acquired as the second overall pick in the 2004 MLB Draft, Verlander wasted no time showcasing his extraordinary pitching abilities. His early success was evident in the 2006 season, when he earned the AL Rookie of the Year award with 95% of the vote. He also received both Cy Young award votes and MVP votes that season.

Verlander’s most spectacular season with the Tigers came in 2011, a year that solidified his place among the game’s elite. He not only secured the AL Cy Young Award but also achieved the rare feat of winning the MVP award as a pitcher – something only 25 other pitchers have done in the history of the league. A six-time All-Star during his Tigers career, Verlander consistently delivered quality starts and played a pivotal role in the team’s four consecutive AL Central division titles from 2011 to 2014. He was a workhorse who pitched over 200 innings in 10 of his 12 seasons in Detroit. Said Dusty Baker, his manager in Houston: “He’s a pleasure to manage because I knew what I was getting every day. Justin Verlander began his career with the Tigers, and there are myriad rookie cards available from 2005 sets. The most sought-after is the Bowman Chrome card, which is also available in an autographed version. That card commands $500-$1,000 and is difficult to find, for a modern card. Gold refractors (signed and unsigned) are also available.

8. Harry Heilmann

Harry Heilmann was a formidable outfielder for the Tigers during the Dead Ball Era and moving into the “lively ball” era. Joining the Tigers in 1914, Heilman was a consistent and powerful hitter who won the AL batting title four times during his Tigers tenure (1921, 1923, 1925, and 1927).  He finished his career with a lofty .342 average.

A key member of the famed Tigers outfield, Heilmann played an integral role in the Tigers’ offensive powerhouse during the 1920s.

His achievements extended beyond batting titles; as a Tiger, he demonstrated power by hitting 183 career home runs. Heilmann earned the nickname “Slug” because, as the story goes, he could slug the ball harder than any player except Babe Ruth. The nickname was also fitting due to his legendary reputation for being a notably slow runner. One sportswriter said that Heilmann could have been the greatest right-handed hitter in history if he could have beat out more hits.

Although Heilmann never won an MVP award, he finished in the top 10 of voting for five straight seasons. His most notable season came in 1923 when he posted a remarkable .403 batting average. These offensive contributions were instrumental in the Tigers’ success, leading the team to three consecutive AL pennants from 1907 to 1909. Despite falling short in the World Series each time, Heilmann’s ability to consistently deliver at the plate solidified his status as one of the premier hitters of his era. He also later became a broadcaster for his beloved Tigers.

The Exhibits cards are legendary in the hobby, and this card of Heilmann shows him in a well-framed pose with his bat, looking directly at the camera. These cards cost between $400-$800 in average condition, with higher grades doubling that price (or more).

7. Hank Greenberg

Hank Greenberg, the legendary first baseman and outfielder, was an imposing presence, standing 6’4″ and weighing 215 lb. He was also one of the most feared power hitters in the 1930s and 1940s.

Greenberg played a crucial role in the Tigers’ back-to-back World Series appearances in 1934 and 1935. Despite falling short in 1934, Greenberg’s leadership and stellar performance in 1935 secured the Tigers’ second championship in franchise history. His offensive contributions during these postseason runs, even as a young slugger, solidified his legacy as one of the greatest Tigers players of all time. He won the World Series with the Tigers again in 1945, as he hit .304 in a seven game series against the Cubs.

Greenberg earned two MVP awards during his Tigers career (1935 and 1940) and appeared in five All-Star games, a testament to his consistent excellence. Greenberg was one of many players who interrupted his career to join the military, leaving baseball from 1942-1944. When he returned, he played two more seasons for Detroit – even finishing in the top 10 of MVP vote-getters in 1946 – before playing an additional season in Philadelphia and retiring.

Sadly, Greenberg faced pervasive antisemitism during his career, serving as the de facto face of Jewish players in a sport where bigotry was not uncommon. While he was reluctant to acknowledge his role as a trailblazer at the time, he nonetheless served as a role model for future Jewish players, including Sandy Koufax. Said Greenberg: “When I was playing, I used to resent being singled out as a Jewish ballplayer. I wanted to be known as a great ballplayer, period. Lately, though, I find myself wanting to be remembered not only as a great ballplayer, but even more as a great Jewish ballplayer.”

Hank Greenberg was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1956.

Best Tigers baseball card: 1934 Goudey Hank Greenberg #62 (RC)

This colorized card, which features quotes from Lou Gehrig on the back, is Greenberg’s rookie card. This card is popular but, unlike many other cards from the 30s, it is fairly easy to find now. Because Greenberg is one of the stars of the set, expect to pay $4,000-$6,000 for a mid-grade version (PSA 4, 5 or 6).

6. Miguel Cabrera

Miguel Cabrera, or “Miggy,” was a premier slugger for the Tigers in the early 2000s. The Tigers acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Florida Marlins before the 2008 season, and he swiftly became the linchpin of the team’s offense. He earned a reputation as a slugger with a high batting average, leading the league in home runs and RBI twice, and topping the batting average charts four times.

Cabrera achieved the rare feat of hitting over 500 home runs and collecting over 3,000 hits, an accomplishment reached by only six other players in MLB history.

Cabrera’s offensive prowess reached its pinnacle in 2012 when he achieved the rare Triple Crown, leading the American League in batting average (.330), home runs (44), and RBIs (139). This remarkable feat, last accomplished by Carl Yastrzemski in 1967, solidified Cabrera’s status as one of the game’s premier hitters. He also won two AL Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards during his Tigers tenure (2012 and 2013), underscoring his consistent excellence and impact on the team’s success, and had seven All-Star appearances with Detroit.

Beyond individual achievements, Cabrera played an instrumental role in helping the Tigers clinch four consecutive AL Central division titles from 2011 to 2014. Despite falling short of a World Series championship, his contributions to the team and the city of Detroit were immeasurable.

Miguel Cabrera retired from Major League Baseball in 2023 and is eligible for Hall of Fame induction in 2029.

Cabrera began his career in Florida and only arrived via trade in 2008, so his rookie cards are out of bounds here. Luckily, we have something better. Cabrera accomplished a Triple Crown in hitting in 2012, and Topps commemorated it with this unique, 10-card set featuring Cabrera in various poses with jersey swatches. You can pick your favorite, but we like the confidence of Cabrera in TCR-5. The cards, inserted in 1:432 packs, are rare. Ungraded cards typically cost around $40-$50.

5. Sam Crawford

Sam Crawford, a prolific outfielder, left an indelible mark on the Detroit Tigers during his illustrious career. Joining the Tigers in 1903, Crawford quickly became known for his hitting and exceptional base running, earning him a reputation as one of the most feared hitters of the Deadball Era. Said Chicago player Fielder Jones: “None of them can hit quite as hard as Crawford. He stands up at the plate like a brick house and he hits all the pitchers, without playing favorites.”

Crawford’s notable achievements included capturing the AL RBI title three times. His combination of hitting for average and his speed made him a dual threat on the basepaths, and he is the all-time MLB leader in triples. Crawford was so good, local newspapers gave him the nickname “Triple Sam.” He only played in seven seasons in which there was an MVP award, but he finished in the top 20 for four of those seasons, including a second place finish in 1914.

A member of the famed “Cobb and Crawford” outfield duo, Crawford’s defensive skills complemented his offensive prowess. The Tigers’ outfield became known for its stellar play, with Crawford’s contributions earning him a reputation as a well-rounded player. Crawford and Cobb played together for 13 years and they were fiercely competitive, leading to a strained relationship. They repaired their relationship in later years; it was Cobb who campaigned to have Crawford inducted into the Hall of Fame, which happened in 1957.

The 1914 Cracker Jack set is one of the most famous from the 1910s. The card has a drawing of Crawford on a red background, following through from a throw. Unfortunately, this card can be difficult to find, and sells between $500-$3,000 in an average condition.

4. Hal Newhouser

Hal Newhouser, a left-handed pitcher, joined the Tigers from 1939-1953. He first hit his stride in the 1942 season, making his first of seven All-Star teams. His dominance on the mound became particularly evident during the 1944 and 1945 seasons when he led the league in wins, strikeouts, and ERA, earning him back-to-back AL MVP awards and pitching Triple Crowns. His 1946 season was nearly as good: He led the league in wins and ERA again, but finished second in MVP voting to Ted Williams.

Newhouser’s impact extended beyond individual accolades, as he played a pivotal role in the Tigers’ success during the 1945 season. He led the team to an AL pennant and a World Series championship, marking a significant milestone in Tigers history. His exceptional performance in the World Series, where he won two games and posted a 2.21 ERA, solidified his legacy.

Newhouser pitched with distinction in two more World Series, which the team lost. His impact on the Tigers’ pitching staff and his role in securing the team’s last championship until 1968 cemented his status as a Detroit legend. After his playing career ended, Newhouser became a successful scout for the Detroit Tigers. He helped to sign many future stars, including Mickey Stanley, Al Kaline, and Willie Horton.

This is Newhouser’s rookie, in the sense that it’s his first mainstream card (he debuted nearly a decade earlier). The 1948 Leaf set is legendary in its own right, but Newhouser’s card is popular because of his unique pose, showing his wind-up and grip. As with all 1948 Leaf cards, it’s heavy on the reds, yellows and blues, but that’s the retro appeal of this set. The card is available for $1,000-$3,000 in mid-grade conditions but expect to pay a premium for higher grades (PSA 8 is the highest known grade and has sold for $48,000).

3. Charlie Gehringer

Charlie Gehringer was a legendary Tigers second baseman 1924-1942 – all with the Detroit Tigers. Known for his exceptional hitting, fielding, and base running, he earned the nickname “The Mechanical Man” for his consistent and methodical approach to the game.

Gehringer’s offensive prowess was particularly evident in 1937 when he captured the AL batting title with an impressive .371 average. He also won the MVP award that season. Gehringer also contributed defensively – He was known for his smooth, effortless fielding style and his ability to make difficult plays look easy. He was also a very accurate fielder, leading the American League in fielding percentage at second base six times.

In addition to his hitting skills, Gehringer was a tough player who rarely missed a game, averaging 142 games in each of his full seasons. The only blip was a back injury in 1931 that limited him to 101 games played.

Gehringer’s impact extended beyond his individual achievements; he played a crucial role in the Tigers’ success during the 1935 season. As a key member of the lineup, he helped lead the team to an AL pennant and a World Series championship. Gehringer’s contributions during the postseason, where he batted .375 in the World Series, solidified his status as a clutch performer and a leader on the field.

A six-time All-Star with the Tigers, Gehringer’s consistency at the plate was remarkable. He recorded over 200 hits in seven different seasons and retired as the Tigers’ all-time leader in hits with 2,839. Gehringer also hit .320 with a .404 OBP for his career.
